VESDA LaserSCANNER Aspirating Smoke Detectors have been selected to provide early warning smoke detection at the new Mid Field Terminal Building (MTB) at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
The MTB will be the largest in Abu Dhabi once opened in 2017. The VESDA LaserSCANNER detectors were selected due to the difficulties presented by the buildings large open areas. Capable of dividing a zone into individual pipe sectors the VESDA LaserSCANNER was an effective choice for detecting smoke diluted by the MTB’s air conditioning systems.
Visible from over 1.5km away, the terminal complex will be able to accommodate 8,500 passengers per hour. The requirement for VESDA’s reliable smoke detection and minimum false alarm immunity is of paramount importance where so many passengers will be present in such a large open space.
Similar in operation to the VESDA LaserPLUS, the LaserSCANNER employs a floating valve mechanism capable of detecting smoke in individual pipes known as sectors. During normal conditions, all valves are open and the LaserSCANNER detects smoke at the earliest opportunity. Once smoke is detected, the LaserSCANNER begins a cycle of opening and closing individual valves in each pipe. The presence of smoke in an individual pipe is then established and can be communicated via on board display, relay outputs or additional VesdaNET capable devices.
